SPAIN

Interior Minister Jaime Mayor Oreja has called for a Europe-wide arrest warrant which would make the extradition of suspects unnecessary. He said the warrant would end the "limitations" which hindered countries in the fight against crime. GEORGIA Tbilisi & Ankara have agreed to remove anti-personnel mines from their joint border & not to use them for border protection in the future. Georgian Defence Minister Davit Tevzadze said Georgia & Turkey were working to clear the mines.

United Nations police investigating the murder of a journalist 25 years ago in East Timor are seeking the arrest of a former Indonesian government minister. Malcolm Rennie 29 from Renfrewshire was killed in October 1975 while working for an Australian news channel. Indonesian authorities said he & five others were caught in a crossfire. Relatives have welcomed the UN's request for three warrants including one for former minister Yunus Yosfiah accused of crimes against humanity.

A museum attendant who stole rare coins worth £160 000 to pay for his heroin habit has been jailed for six months. Douglas Wilson 37 of Perth admitted stealing from Perth Museum. SHOOTING One man has died & another is critically ill after a shooting outside Chicago's nightclub in Peckham south London at about 4.15am. Five men are being questioned by police. JOBS The Taiwanese computer company Acer has announced it will set up a multi-lingual call centre in Belfast creating more than 140 jobs.

CHHOKAR TRIAL BANNING ORDER "A MISTAKE"

A media ban on reporting contempt of court proceedings against two witneses in a high-profile case was a mistake it has emerged. The restrictions imposed over the sentencing of Ronnie Coulter & Sandra Teirney were lifted on Monday. The Court of Justiciary admitted there had been confusion over the terms of the order posted on a court's website. The pair were each jailed for two years on Friday for contempt at the second trial for the murder of Surjit Chhokar.

PIPE BOMB ACCUSED COLLAPSES IN COURT

One of four men charged with making a pipe bomb following a raid in Ealing west London has collapsed in court. head on the dock during proceedings at Horseferry Road Magistrates' Court. The court was adjourned for over two hours while an ambulance was called. Lee was remanded in custody until Monday. The three other men were remanded until February 12.

ORGAN SCANDAL THREAT TO TRANSPLANT OPS

Heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub has said public anxiety over the Alder Hey organ scandal is threatening transplants. Sir Magdi told The Times there had been no organ transplants at London's Royal Brompton Hospital since the report on Alder Hey was released. He said a baby girl patient of his was gravely ill waiting for a new heart. Staff say donors need to be reassured that practices like those at Alder Hey do not apply to transplant procedures.

THAI POLICE PROBE MURDER OF BRITISH MAN

Police in Thailand are investigating the murder of a British man whose body was discovered in a hotel in the country the Foreign Office has said. The victim was found in the Kanchanaburi province on Saturday after flying into the country last week. The Sun newspaper said a couple were in custody after admitting to the murder. A Foreign Office official said the man's name would not be released until relatives had been informed.

POLICE CHIEF IN PLANE LANDING EMERGENCY

A plane being flown by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens has been involved in an emergency which closed Newcastle Airport for 30 minutes The twin-engined Piper Seneca plane had problems with its undercarriage when the nose wheel landing gear failed to engage properly. Sir John was forced to circle the plane to burn off fuel before landing. Neither he nor his passenger suffered any injuries.

TEAMS TELL OF EARTHQUAKE RESCUE ELATION

Rescue workers arriving back in the UK from India's earthquake zone have been speaking of the "elation" of helping to rescue people from beneath the rubble. Among those to fly back from Gujarat was the Rapid UK team which freed a 10- year-old boy in a nine-hour operation. "It was fantastic that is what it is all about " member Nick Spence said. Meanwhile another two planes have left Britain carrying 50 tonnes of aid to the earthquake's victims.

TWO MEN FOUND DEAD AT BOTTOM OF LIFT

Two young men have been found dead at the bottom of a lift shaft in a high- rise block of flats in Southampton. Police said they believed the men in their 20s had been fighting after a party & had fallen 150ft from the 7th floor of the tower block in Shirley. Police believe they hit the lift doors which sprang open. Thirteen people were at the party. The two victims were local but are not believed to have lived in the building.
