MANDELSON LET GOVERNMENT DOWN ` SHORT

International Development Secretary Clare Short has accused Peter Mandelson of letting the Government down. She told BBC Radio 4 that he had quit as Northern Ireland Secretary because "he has got problems with the truth". It was "very sad" that Mr Mandelson had penned "acres of newsprint" since his resignation she said adding that he had also "let himself down". "Peter Mandelson is over " Ms Short told The World This Weekend.

UN ISSUE WARRANTS IN HUNT FOR KILLERS

United Nations police investigating the murder of a journalist 25 years ago in East Timor are seeking the arrest of a former Indonesian government minister. Malcolm Rennie 29 from Renfrewshire was killed in October 1975 while working for an Australian news channel. Indonesian authorities said he & five others were caught in a crossfire. Relatives have welcomed the UN's request for three warrants including one for former minister Yunus Yosfiah accused of crimes against humanity.

"SUICIDE ATTEMPTS" IN LOCKERBIE PROTEST

One Libyan used a razor & another a knife to attack themselves in apparent suicide attempts to protest at the Lockerbie conviction reports say. The men were among about 1 000 people demonstrating over the guilty verdict outside the UN building in Tripoli. Witnesses said the men were angry at what they called a US-inspired verdict. Secret agent Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was found guilty of the 1988 bombing on Wednesday. A second man was cleared.

LIBYANS DEMONSTRATE OUTSIDE UN BUILDING

Two Libyan men have stabbed themselves in protest at the conviction of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi for the Lockerbie bombing. They were among thousands protesting against the verdict in the centre of Tripoli outside the United Nations headquarters building. One man slashed his throat and0the other stabbed himself in the stomach and were taken to hospital. Megrahi was sentenced to life in a Scottish prison.

THREE IRANIAN AGENTS FACE DEATH PENALTY

Three Iranian intelligence agents have been sentenced to death & five given life terms for murdering dissidents in 1998 news agency IRNA has reported. A closed military court acquitted three of the 18 defendants & gave the rest jail terms of up to 10 years. The murder victims were a secular nationalist leader his wife & two liberal writers. The intelligence ministry denied top officials had authorised the killings.

EX-ELF EXECUTIVE TO AWAIT EXTRADITION

A German court has ruled that a French fugitive is to be held in custody until extradition proceedings begin next week Alfred Sirven 74 was detained at Frankfurt airport after deportation from the Philippines. A former executive of French oil firm Elf Aquitaine he is a key figure in the corruption trial of ex-French foreign minister Roland Dumas. A judge said regional authorities would decide if he can be returned to France.

FINANCIERS DENY PROBLEMS WITH DOME DEAL

There are no problems with Legacy's bid to take over the Millennium Dome the consortium's backers have said. But speaking on BBC Radio Four Maurice Harte of Treasury Holdings admitted Legacy is in a difficult position. Yesterday Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said there were "problems" with the bid and a major rival has declared an interest in the London site Mr Harte insisted "respected" companies are keen on using space in the Dome.

RAPE CASES REOPENED AS MULCAHY JAILED

Police are re-examining hundreds of unsolved rapes & murders after yesterday's conviction of serial killer and rapist 41-year-old David Mulcahy. They have appealed to women who may have been victims of David Mulcahy & his friend John Duffy serving life terms for sex crimes to come forward. Mulcahy of north London received three life terms for killing three women. Duffy testified the pair went hunting for women to rape & kill in the 1980s

MAN REMANDED OVER FIVE MURDER CHARGES

The case against a man charged with murdering five members of his family has been adjourned indefinitely because his leading defence counsel is ill. Lee Ford 33 was remanded in custody at Truro Crown Court. He is charged with murdering wife Lesley 36 and her teenage children Craig Steven Anne-Marie & Sarah- Jane who all had the surname Tranter. Their bodies were found buried in two places in Cornwall last October.
