I am sure I'm not alone in expressing

amazement that John Major has romped home as Radio 4's Personality of the Year. Any analysis from recent polls concludes that Mr Major is the most unpopular premier in British political history. It would be interesting to see the latest itemised phone bill from Conservative Central Office. CG Stewart Clydebank

It is right & proper there is a split

in the Conservative & Labour party in Europe. It reflects the split in the country as to whether Europe should be a trading bloc or something more. The debate on the referendum to join the Common Market crossed party boundaries. The same winl happen with the referendum on the single currency. Euro-{ceptic MPs are those who voted against the Maastricht Treaty second reading ` 26 Conservatives 59 Labour. George Powell Liverpool

The first of your letters to be

published were pro-Labour. Presumably they were sent via fast communication systems ` that is hardly the mark of the deprived. I would suggest the contributors are quite obviously prospering under a Conservative Government. Mr B R Wood Pembrokeshire

A Labour Party member tells other

members they should vote for Tony Blair in the BBC's Personality of the Year poll. Result? The BBC removes Blair from the poll. The BBC then says it has uncovered evidence some Tories have voted for John Major more than once. Result? The BBC allows Major's name to stay in & he wins. I will never believe the BBC is politically impartial again. B Hutton Worthing

POLICE SHOULD DISCLOSE MASON MEMBERSHIP

The Police Complaints Authority wants new measures to force officers who are Freemasons to declare their membership. The PCA made the call in submissions to the Commons Home Affairs Committee. It wants a public register of officers who are Masons backed up by a statutory responsibility of disclosure. Such a move was needed to dispel the perception that officers might put their loyalty to the Masons before their official duties the PCA said.
