BODY UPHOLDS BLAIR BROADCAST COMPLAINTS

The Independent Television Commission has upheld opposition parties' complaints over ITV's question & answer session with the prime minister. Parties in Scotland complained Labour was being given an unfair advantage in the programme ` since it was broadcast 10 days before the Falkirk by-election. The watchdog body said the broadcast was relevant to the by-election. It said the opposition parties should be allowed to comment on the issues of the day in the same way as Tony Blair.

Two top US technology schools plan to develop a voting system to avoid the confusion of this year's elections. The California & Massachusetts Institutes of Technology want to develop new voting machines before the 2004 presidential contest. They have had a $250 000 grant from the philanthropic Carnegie Corporation. A nation that put men on the moon should be able to count ballots accurately said MIT head Charles Vest.

US president-elect George W Bush is preparing to confirm his first cabinet appointments with at least one Democrat set to be among the names. An announcement due tomorrow may offer concessions to his political opponents. Among the Democrats tipped for a post is Louisiana Senator John Breaux who is to meet Mr Bush in Texas. It is thought he may be offered the job of energy secretary but he is said to be reluctant to give up his Senate seat

INDONESIA GIVES HOME RULE TO PROVINCES

The Indonesian government is introducing self-rule for its 26 provinces in a move which it hopes will counteract separatist disturbances. The move ` introduced with the minimum of ceremony ` has worried overseas investors & lenders who fear local rulers will overtax foreign firms. VICAR APOLOGISES FOR HIS SANTA SLIP-UP

A vicar & a headteacher have both apologised to parents of pupils as young as seven who were told during assembly that Santa did not exist. Children at Long Buckby Junior School in Northants heard the "terrible" news during a festive message given by the Rev Clive Evans. Speaking on BBC's Radio 4 the vicar said he was sorry for upsetting pupils. Headteacher Jeanette Goddard also sent a letter of apology to angry parents.

MAN IN COURT OVER MURDER OF TAXI DRIVER

A 26-year-old man from Rotherham is due to appear in court charged with the murder of taxi driver Sarfraz Khan. Mr Khan 30 from Rotherham South Yorkshire was stabbed six times ` once through the heart on December 23. He was attacked after picking up passengers outside a school in the town His body was found in his burnt-out car on a nearby nature reserve. A second man arrested on Friday was released without charge.
