ZIMBABWE "SPYING" ON ITS BRITISH EXILES
Almost 40 Zimbabwean agents are spying on exiled opponents of President Robert Mugabe in Britain it is claimed. The Daily Telegraph reports that the country's Central Intelligence Organisation is also monitoring phone calls e-mails & faxes. The opposition Movement for Democratic Change claims exiles are living in fear after being sent a letter of warning. But a Zimbabwean Government spokesman said there was "nothing to worry about"

DEMOCRAT TIPPED FOR BUSH CABINET POST
US president-elect George W Bush is preparing to confirm his first cabinet appointments with at least one Democrat set to be among the names. An announcement due tomorrow may offer concessions to his political opponents. Among the Democrats tipped for a post is Louisiana Senator John Breaux who is to meet Mr Bush in Texas. It is thought he may be offered the job of energy secretary but he is said to be reluctant to give up his Senate seat

LOYALIST LEADER THREATENING TO RESIGN
Ulster Democratic Party leader Gary McMichael has warned he will be forced to resign if the party changes its policy on the Good Friday Agreement. Mr McMichael spoke amid signs that a majority of UDP members are now against the agreement. He told the BBC's Inside Politics that he was "someone who is fundamentally and irreversibly pro-Agreement". He denied being told he will be removed as leader unless he changes the policy.

BLAIR OFFERS SUPPORT TO PRESIDENT BUSH
Tony Blair has promised to support George W Bush when he takes up the US Presidency next year. In an eight-minute telephone call Mr Blair told the President-elect he was assuming an "awesome responsibility". A Downing Street spokesman said Mr Bush stressed he was "aware of the special relationship" between the two countries It was Mr Bush's first call from a foreign leader as President-elect. The two agreed to meet as soon as possible.

US CONGRESS CONFIRMS BUSH ELECTION WIN
The US Congress has confirmed the election of George W Bush as US President under the chairmanship of his defeated rival Vice-President Al Gore. The Senate & House of Representatives convened jointly to read & confirm the votes of the Electoral College. A succession of House members tried to raise points of order alleging election misconduct & fraud. But Mr Gore overruled them because no Senator supported the points of order.

GERMANY Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has agreed to meet French President Jacques Chirac at a special Franco- German summit next month following last weekend's strained summit in Nice. USA man who stalked actress Gwyneth Paltrow for over a year & sent her hundreds of e-mails has been sent to a psychiatric unit in Los Angeles. Dante Soyu also harassed the star's parents. YUGOSLAVIA Bosnia & Yugoslavia have established diplomatic ties eight years after the war which saw Bosnia secede from the federation.15th December 2000

US EXPERTS SEEK RELIABLE VOTING SYSTEM
Two top US technology schools plan to develop a voting system to avoid the confusion of this year's elections. The California & Massachusetts Institutes of Technology want to develop new voting machines before the 2004 presidential contest. They have had a $250 000 grant from the philanthropic Carnegie Corporation. A nation that put men on the moon should be able to count ballots accurately said MIT head Charles Vest.
