GERMANY Three-times Wimbledon champion Boris Becker has anounced he & his wife Barbara are separating. The couple ` married in 1993 ` have two children. BOSNIA The remains of at least 40 people thought to be Bosnian Muslims killed in 1992 have been found buried in a mass grave on the bank of a lake by the Drina river in eastern Bosnia. BANGLADESH At least four people were killed & dozens injured after police opened fire on striking port workers trying to storm offices in the port of Monglas government officials said.

TRIBUNAL CHARGES PLAVSIC WITH GENOCIDE

Former Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic will face charges of genocide this week after surrendering to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague. Plavsic was deputy to Radovan Karadzic during the 1992-95 Balkans War. She took over from him in 1996. The 70-year-old faces charges of genocide crimes against humanity & war crimes at the Dutch court. She is being held in the tribunal's detention centre in Scheveningen.

VIRGIN TO SPEND £2.6bn ON NEW AIR FLEET

Virgin Atlantic is to spend £2.6bn on six Airbus double decker planes nicknamed "superjumbos". The company has an option to buy a further six of the 550-seat A3XX aircraft which contain gyms play areas business centres & showers. The first order of the French-built planes is expected to be ready in 2006. Virgin Atlantic plans to fly the A3XXs on routes from Britain to the United States & the Far East.

NEW YEAR RUNG IN ACROSS THE WORLD

As New Year revellers packed London's Trafalgar Square & the centre of Edinburgh in their thousands the French turned the Eiffel Tower blue. In New York's Times Square 500 000 saw boxer Muhammad Ali open festivities & in Beijing a laser show painted pictures of China's history in the sky. Japan's Buddhist temple bells chimed in time with the sound of ships' horns. In Red Square Russians for the first time sang the new national anthem.

DESERTS THREATENING LIVES OF MILLIONS

German President Johannes Rau opened a conference on desertification by saying the world was living beyond its means and had to take environmental action. Mr Rau told the UN conference in Bonn that the spread of deserts threatened the existence of a billion people & had already made 135m homeless. The problem has now affected one- quarter of the earth's entire soil the German news agency DDP reported. Mr Rau said it was the whole world's responsibility to tackle the problem.

SCHROEDER AND PUTIN ATTEND XMAS SERVICE

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder & Russian President Vladimir Putin have marked the Russian Orthodox Christmas. The leaders & their wives attended a service at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral for a service led by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Earlier they took a stroll in the Kremlin & the Red Square at the start of Mr Schroeder's two-day visit. Tonight the two leaders were due to celebrate Mrs Putin's birthday.

2 000 JOBS GO AS VAUXHALL SHUTS PLANT

The Vauxhall car plant at Luton in Bedfordshire is to close with the loss of 2 000 jobs over the next 15 months. The closure stems from global restructuring by parent firm General Motors which blames over-capacity & changing European market conditions. The Luton factory produces the Vectra for which recent demand has been low. US-based GM is to concentrate production of the model's replacement in Germany & possibly the Netherlands

EU MEASURES TO COMBAT BSE IN FORCE

New measures to counter BSE come into force today across the European Union. Older cattle will be tested for the disease at slaughterhouses before the meat can be sold. A UK Government adviser on BSE welcomed the tests on cattle aged over 30 months which were brought in following BSE cases in France Germany & Spain. Professor Peter Smith said processed meat products which used EU imported beef should now present a lower risk.

VICAR APOLOGISES FOR HIS SANTA SLIP-UP

A vicar & a headteacher have both apologised to parents of pupils as young as seven who were told during assembly that Santa did not exist. Children at Long Buckby Junior School in Northants heard the "terrible" news during a festive message given by the Rev Clive Evans. Speaking on BBC's Radio 4 the vicar said he was sorry for upsetting pupils. Headteacher Jeanette Goddard also sent a letter of apology to angry parents.

BROWN PLANS SKILLS TESTS FOR JOBLESS

Chancellor Gordon Brown is announcing a #24m plan to introduce new skills tests for the long-term unemployed. Those out of work for over six months will be required to take a test from April before being offered training. Benefit could be withdrawn from those who refuse the tests or training ` but not single parents or disabled people. Mr Brown said it would help the UK move towards full employment. He will detail the plan in a speech to the AEEU union.

ZIMBABWE "SPYING" ON ITS BRITISH EXILES

Almost 40 Zimbabwean agents are spying on exiled opponents of President Robert Mugabe in Britain it is claimed. The Daily Telegraph reports that the country's Central Intelligence Organisation is also monitoring phone calls e-mails & faxes. The opposition Movement for Democratic Change claims exiles are living in fear after being sent a letter of warning. But a Zimbabwean Government spokesman said there was "nothing to worry about"

US president-elect George W Bush is preparing to confirm his first cabinet appointments with at least one Democrat set to be among the names. An announcement due tomorrow may offer concessions to his political opponents. Among the Democrats tipped for a post is Louisiana Senator John Breaux who is to meet Mr Bush in Texas. It is thought he may be offered the job of energy secretary but he is said to be reluctant to give up his Senate seat

SCOTTISH MUSEUM PURCHASES FIGHTER PLANE

One of the world's rarest aeroplanes has been bought for nearly £200 000 by the Museum of Flight at East Fortune in East Lothian. A Bristol Beaufighter of World War Two vintage it has been described as the museum's most significant acquisition since it opened in 1976. There were 5 600 Beaufighters produced up to 1945 ` with many based at airfields in Scotland. The curator at East Fortune Adam Smith was surprised to find one up for sale.

US AND ISRAEL SIGN WORLD COURT TREATY

The US & Israel signed a treaty to create an international war crimes court as the midnight deadline neared. The court would be the first permanent institution to try charges such as genocide & crimes against humanity. Sixty countries need to ratify the treaty before it can come into existence ` so far 27 have. The US hesitated before deciding to sign the treaty which has been criticised by American conservatives.
