SIX KILLED IN CLASHES IN MIDDLE EAST
An Israeli army officer was shot dead in the Gaza Strip yesterday evening ` the sixth fatality in a day of clashes. Major Sharon Arameh 25 was killed by Palestinian gunfire in Khan Younis town Earlier four Palestinians & an Israeli were reported to have been killed in clashes in the West Bank. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat & Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak have pledged to Russian President Vladimir Putin to work together to end violence.

its usual schedule for the first time since the uprising began in September. Dramas cultural & religious programmes & regular news programmes have now been reintroduced to replace live reports & national songs. RUSSIA An express train capable of carrying 400 passengers left St Petersburg for Moscow for the first time on Sunday Russian NTV reported. The train can travel at 125 mph & the journey will almost halve the usual travelling time of around eight hours.

PALESTINIANS REJECT CLINTON PEACE PLAN
The Palestinians have rejected US President Bill Clinton's proposals for peace in the Middle East reports say. Information minister Yasser Abed Rabbo is reported to have said the proposals were unacceptable to the Palestinians. Peace negotiators said Mr Clinton's deal was identical to Israel's blueprint for ending the violence. Yesterday Mr Clinton called for a "long leap" from both sides to close their 52-year divide.

ORTHODOX CHURCH ATTACKS PAPAL VISIT
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate one of Ukraine's largest churches has criticized a planned visit by Pope John Paul II. It says the trip is politically motivated & will damage ties between the Orthodox & Catholic churches. The church accuses the Ukrainian nationalist party Rukh & a rival Ukrainian church of the Greek Catholics of organizing the visit set for June. It also accuses them of destroying three Orthodox dioceses in west Ukraine

PRO-EUROPEAN TORIES FEAR "WITCH HUNT"
Former Tory Chancellor Kenneth Clarke has warned his party not to launch a "witch hunt" against pro-Europeans. Writing in the Independent on Sunday Mr Clarke fears such action would lead to "short term electoral consequences and longer term political damage". He warns against eurosceptics "forcing a narrow nationalism onto our MPs". His comments follow moves to de-select pro-European former minister Ian Taylor in his constituency of Esher & Walton

ISRAELI MINISTER HOPING FOR PEACE DEAL
A moderate Israeli minister has said a peace agreement with the Palestinians may be reached before President Clinton leaves office in January. Justice minister Yossi Beilin was speaking after a trip to Washington where he briefly met the President. He said Mr Clinton told him resolving the peace process was a priority in the last days of his administration. But prime minister Ehud Barak sees only an interim agreement being reached.

25 REPORTED HURT IN WEST BANK FIGHTING
At least 25 Palestinians are reported to have been wounded in fighting with Israeli troops & armed settlers at the village of Husan west of Bethlehem Palestinian reports claimed the village was attacked while citizens ate their Ramadan fast-breaking meal. According to an Israeli military source the incident was sparked by a woman settler being hit by a stone The woman had to be taken to hospital after the incident.

RUSSIAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT "INCOMPETENT"
The representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Far East of the country has said the local government there is incapable of doing its job. "It is now time we said of Maritime Territory that those in charge are not capable of managing this region " Konstantin Pulikovskiy said. Speaking on Ekho Moskvy radio he also said the local governor had lied to cover up the reasons for a fuel crisis. The crisis means some towns have no heating in freezing temperatures.

KYRGYZSTANA lawyer for a popular
Russian-language newspaper has been murdered in the capital Bishkek. The Russian news agency RIA said that 25-year-old Vadim Kolomeytsev who works for Vecherniy Bishkek seemed to have been the victim of a robbery. CHINA Police have arrested a South Korean citizen suspected of helping North Korean defectors the South Korean news agency Yonhap reports. Yun Kyong-sik who himself defected from North Korea in 1996 faces a one- year prison sentence if found guilty.
