The Italian press is coming down hard

on the European Union. Under the headline "The Europe of hypocrisy" Turin'sLa Stampaargues that in the past few months Europe has failed to tackle any of the issues it has been confronted with. This is especially true of the enlargement to the East & its treatment of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan the paper says. It concludes Europe's credibility is not strong enough to be dropping bombs on Serbia.

Thousands of anti-war campaigners have been jeered by about 400 pro-Nato demonstrators wanting tougher action. Counter-demonstrators with banners reading: "Bombs weren't the cause ` cleansing was planned " chanted near Trafalgar Square central London. Pro-Nato organiser Meriton Krasniqi said Nato should send ground troops or arm the Kosovo Liberation Army. "We have had 10 years of fruitless talks & got nowhere " he said.

NEW NATO TROOPS "NOT AN INVASION FORCE"

Nato troops being sent to Albania to help deal with the refugee crisis will not be used to invade Kosovo Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has insisted. "They don't have the heavy equipment they don't have the tanks " Mr Cook told the BBC. "We have no intention of risking our troops in those circumstances. It's not going to happen " he added. Mr Cook was echoing comments made by the Prime Minister last night.

JAPAN An outspoken nationalist known for his anti-American views has won a heated race for the governership of Tokyo. Shintara Ishihara wants a more independent Japanese foreign policy. TURKEY Seven soldiers have been wounded in a "terrorist" attack on a convoy on its way to operations in the rural part of Tokat's Erbaa District the news agency Anatolia has reported.

A suspected Turkish spy has been thrown out of the country after being discovered by federal security forces. The agent posing as a businessman had been on a "spying & subversive mission" for Turkish military intelligence a Russian agency said. FRANCE Some 20 000 protesters staged a right-to-hunt demonstration in the southern city of Toulouse. The protest was over the length of the hunting season for migratory birds. The hunters' banners read: "Our votes are also migratory " French radio said.

TV SHOWS AID WORKER ACCUSED OF SPYING

One of two Australian aid workers who disappeared 10 days ago in Serbia has been shown on state TV after being arrested & accused of spying. Head of Care Australia in Yugoslavia Steve Pratt was shown in profile and his own words were not audible. He was quoted as admitting to gathering intelligence on the military & police He also reportedly "apologised for activities which could have been detrimental to the country".

PLEA NOT TO BOMB KOSOVO HISTORIC SITES

A senior Labour MP has urged Nato pilots to spare Kosovo's historic sites Linlithgow MP Tam Dalyell said he had contacted the Ministry of Defence about four 13th & 14th century sites. The said they had "European historical importance" & were sacred to Serbs and bombing them would be like bombing Durham Lincoln & Wells cathedrals. He said the MoD told him the message would reach commanders & that a similar appeal had been heeded in Iraq.

Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has made

public a map detailing sites in Kosovo where Nato believes Yugoslavia has carried out so-called ethnic cleansing. Speaking at a Ministry of Defence briefing he said the alliance demanded ethnic Albanians had been driven out. Mr Cook called on Yugoslavia to allow journalists into the areas. The international community was united in its resolve he said.

US LEGISLATORS WARN OF LONG KOSOVO WAR

A group of US Senators & Congressmen has warned the White House to prepare the nation for months of military action over Kosovo and for casualties. After attending Nato briefings most of the group also said the alliance should prepare for using ground forces if air raids fail to sway the Yugoslav regime. The legislators said they were pleased by the commitment of Nato allies. But they said they doubted air strikes alone would achieve Nato's objectives.

FRESH US STRIKES IN IRAQI "NO-FLY" ZONE

US warplanes have attacked Iraqi air defences in the allied-imposed no-fly zone in the south of the country a US "Fighting Falcons were illuminated by Iraqi missile-guidance systems & subsequently fired on " he said. The F-16s returned fire & returned safely after the engagement about 100 miles south of Baghdad he added. The US said this was the latest of nearly 160 provocations since December.

GUILTY PLEAS IN ASBESTOS CLEARANCE CASE

Two former company directors have admitted employing schoolboys to clear asbestos from a factory. Leeds Crown Court heard that one boy of 14 & two of 15 were hired for the work at a plant in Yeadon West Yorks. Neil Medley 37 and his brother Andrew 36 admitted offences under health & safety legislation. Sentencing will take place on Friday ruled out a custodial punishment.

BLAIR FLAGS TROOPS PLAN AT AZNAR SUMMIT

Tony Blair has said British troops could form part of an international force to return Kosovo Albanians home. The situation in the Balkans has dominated weekend talks between the Prime Minister & Spanish leader Jose Maria Aznar at Chequers. Mr Blair said they were both committed to the present Nato strategy. He said they had also agreed a joint declaration on employment & economic reform in the European Union.
