to dominate the European press. Pictures of the eerie loneliness of the refugee camps evacuated by Macedonian police are on most of the front pages. "Tens of thousands of refugees wander across Europe" is the headline in Spain'sEl Pais. Serbia's main pro-Milosevic paper Politika prefers a picture of the president meeting representatives of the Russian Duma.

Earlier Russia said it would send troops to Yugoslavia to back a Russia- Belarus-Yugoslavia political union.

CASHMERE INDUSTRY ESCAPES TRADE DUTIES

The US has lifted punitive trade duties on Scotland's cashmere industry imposed in the transatlantic "banana war". A final list of European products liable to 100% duties excludes cashmere products & Italian pecorino cheese. The move follows a ruling by the World Trade Organisation that EU banana imports discriminated against US fruit. US trade chiefs were angry that EU concessions were given to former UK & French colonial banana growers.

RUSSIA REASSURES US ON MISSILES CLAIM

The White House says Russian officials have reassured the US that Moscow has not targeted its missiles on Nato states involved in the Kosovo campaign. Russian parliamentary speaker Gennady Seleznyov had been quoted as saying President Yeltsin had given the order. Earlier Nato spokesman Jamie Shea told a press briefing that the claims should be treated with a "pinch of salt". He also played down Russia's warnings to Nato against ground troops in Kosovo

GROUND TROOPS TO BACK ALBANIA AID DRIVE

Nato is to send 8 000 ground troops to Albania to provide "military support" to the humanitarian aid effort. Alliance spokesman Jamie Shea said Operation Allied Harbour would get under way by the end of next week. Fourteen Nato nations would contribute troops to the plan he said. Mr Shea added that Nato was concerned that Kosovo Albanian refugees trying to leave the province seemed to have been prevented from doing so.

the meeting of EU ministers to discuss the Kosovo refugees. It says the union has to prove it has learned lessons from the war in Bosnia. Back then Germany took in most of the refugees & felt left alone by its EU partners. The German government is right in insisting now that the burden of the Kosovo refugees is shared more evenly the paper says.

RUSSIA BELARUS YUGOSLAVIA SEEK UNION

A senior Russian MP Gennady Seleznev has said President Boris Yeltsin favours Yugoslavia joining Russia's union with Belarus Itar-Tass reports. The request came initially from Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. Mr Seleznev a communist deputy who visited Belgrade this week said Mr Yeltsin had told officials to draft a document on a union with Yugoslavia. But Mr Yeltsin said on Thursday such a union with Russia's traditional ally would be politically inopportune.

PIER CLEARED AFTER WWII BOMB EMERGES

Around 600 people have been evacuated from Southend pier after a World War II bomb was dredged up by a fishing vessel A Royal Naval bomb disposal team is dealing with the device which is thought to have emerged some three quarters of a mile from the pier. Police are co-ordinating operations from the seaward end of the structure. The pier ` the longest in the world ` was crowded because of a special Easter egg event.

The Queen Duke of Edinburgh & Prince of Wales will all take part in the opening ceremony of Scotland's first parliament for nearly 300 years. The Queen will present the Parliament with a specially commissioned mace.
