MAJOR POWER MEETING NEXT WEEK ON KOSOVO

Russia & major Western powers are due to discuss the Kosovo crisis next week. The proposal for a meeting of the G8 powers had been made by Russia. US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright & French German Italian and British ministers had agreed to it said an Italian spokeswoman. The Contact Group for Yugoslavia comprising Britain France Germany Italy Russia & the United States is also due to meet.

THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES TO COME TO UK

Britain is ready to offer temporary homes to refugees who have fled the crisis in Kosovo says Downing Street. Numbers have not been discussed but Government sources said it would be "some thousands". Up to now Britain has insisted that taking in refugees would only assist Slobodan Milosevic's ethnic cleansing. The Government says refugees would be housed on a temporary basis until it is safe for them to return home.

REFUGEES TO GO TO THIRD COUNTRIES

Nato members are to provide temporary refuge for thousands of people forced to flee their homes in Kosovo the alliance has confirmed. Germany had offered to take 40 000 Turkey 20 000 & the US 20 000 Nato spokesman Jamie Shea said in a briefing from Brussels. Norway will take 6 000. Britain has said it will take thousands on a temporary basis. Mr Shea said Nato planes bringing in aid were flying back with refugees.

TRUCKERS' CITY CENTRAL DEMO WINDS UP

Lorry drivers protesting in central London at fuel & road tax increases have left the capital. The truckers drove round Marble Arch tooting their horns before beginning the journey out of the city. They had driven to London in convoys causing severe congestion on the M1 M2 M3 & M11. More than 200 lorries were parked in Park Lane at one stage. Some of the drivers handed in a petition to Downing Street. I

BRITAIN REJECTS YUGOSLAVIAN TRUCE OFFER

The British Government has denounced as worthless the declaration of a truce by Yugoslav & Serb officials. Downing Street said it wanted to see a complete withdrawal of Serb forces from Kosovo & Belgrade's agreement on an international force. This would oversee the return to their homes of the Kosovo Albanians & other refugees displaced by the fighting. Russia welcomed the truce but the US insisted Nato attacks would continue.

UNITY CALL TO TOPPLE MALAYSIA'S PM

The wife of Malaysia's ousted deputy premier has launched a new political party & urged opposition groups to unite to ditch PM Mahathir Mohamad. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail called for a common front to free the country from a "stranglehold of crisis & oppression" Her husband was sacked from office last September & charged with corruption. There has been speculation that the government will call a snap election amid signs of an economic recovery.
