NO BASIS TO TRY US TROOPS SAYS CLINTON

There is "no basis" for the three US servicemen to be held ` or tried ` by Yugoslavia President Clinton has said. The US believes the servicemen were in Macedonia when they were seized. The Serbs claim they were in Serbia. Nato's chief spokesman has said the men were carrying out peacekeeping work & should never have been captured at all. Meanwhile friends & relatives of the captured soldiers have insisted the three were just serving their country.

President Clinton has declared that "no target is off-limits" in the campaign to force Serb troops to end their repression of Kosovo Albanians. The Kosovo operation is "difficult & dangerous... but necessary & right " he said adding "there are times when looking away is simply not an option". A US spokesman said a key aim was to degrade Yugoslav military capability. Cruise missiles hit central Belgrade last night wrecking strategic targets.

CLINTON SENDS IN THE APACHE HELICOPTERS

President Clinton has agreed to deploy strike helicopters for use against Serb tanks & forces in Kosovo. AH-64 Apache helicopters & support troops are being sent to the Balkans US national security adviser Samuel Berger has confirmed. He added that the support forces "are not a ground force" but would simply be there to work with the Apaches. There is still no word on how many helicopters are being deployed.

There will be no let-up in Nato attacks on Yugoslavia until there is full compliance with Nato terms Tony Blair has warned President Milosevic. The alliance would keep up the pressure with total resolve said Mr Blair. He told Belgrade: "Gains you think you have made will be reversed" & warned against Mr Milosevic presenting himself as a peacemaker in the coming days. And he vowed to Kosovo Albanians: "We will ensure you are allowed to return."

about the implications of the Nato offensive against Yugoslavia for Austria's neutrality. It looks at several situations which could test this neutrality including what it calls "the horror scenario for the military". "If a Nato flight crossing Austrian airspace were to crash American rescue teams would have to try to bring its crew out and the Austrian army would have to try & stop them" it says.

RUSSIAN SPY SHIP HEADS FOR ADRIATIC

A Russian intelligence-gathering ship bound for the Adriatic where it will monitor the Kosovo crisis for Moscow has entered the straits of Bosphorus. The ship the Liman is being escorted through the straits by a Turkish Navy boat Anatolia news agency said. Military vessels cannot enter the straits without Turkish permission. The Liman left the Black Sea port of Sevastopol on Friday & is the first of seven vessels Russia plans to send to the Yugoslav coast.

COOK URGES MACEDONIAN REFUGEE SANCTUARY

Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has urged the international community to set up a sanctuary in Macedonia for Kosovo refugees. "This place of refuge would be created protected & supplied by Nato troops " he added. International Development Secretary Clare Short visits Macedonia tomorrow. Mr Cook has said Britain will give an extra £10m to help the thousands of refugees flowing out of Kosovo.
